Below is my script for my ignite if you want to give it a gander
Hi there everyone,
I am Sidney Rud and welcome to my ignite talk. During this presentation, I hope to reflect on this program so far and share what brought me here, what I have learned so far and what I hope to figure out throughout the rest of this program.
So Block one is done – let’s reflect.
I feel as if we have jumped in headfirst and we are treading water but now we need the tools to survive- we need to collect our concrete tools for teaching and figure out how to use them.
We are the babies we need to become the scuba divers… which will happen slowly over time and probably still keep happening even after this program
Okay, so how did I end up here?
I honestly really love working with children and have worked with children in afterschool care for two years as well as an in-school mentor and group mentor- getting into schools seemed like the next step and felt right
I want to teach because I want to support kids and give them the best platform we can for success when they leave the education system as well as give student positive experiences with education and teachers
Some things that got in think in education 394
– An early one was the Parker Palmer reading because it really got me thinking about authenticity and how who you matter when creating successful connections
Assessment was also a topic that made me think because how we go about assessment can vary and what implications our approaches have was very thought-provoking in regard to all the underlying messaging we need to be aware of when interacting with kids
Differentiated instruction also spoke out to me because I believe that is great to give students choice because nobody is the same so we are all going to learn differently and when given choice students have agency in their education
So Moving into Things that Challenged my thinking in other classes
– One main thing that challenged me was how to bring in the indigenous perspective while still being respectful of sacred knowledge what I took from this learning though is that it always best to reach out to others in the community if you are unsure
Next up we have digital learning
We are living Digital world and being an online student and having a lot more distanced learning in classrooms concepts like digital literacy and citizenship are important- inside and outside the classroom.
Things like boundaries between students and teachers also really challenged me because I never realized how fragile that line is and how careful we need to be as educators to maintain a healthy and respectful relationship with our students and this can eve come down to small thing like how you refer to your students as a class like using “Boys and Girls” “Friends” and so on.

So what do I bring to the table?
What I see as positive attributes of myself that can apply to my teaching is that I am an empathetic person and I can appreciate the learning journey and understand that everyone is at different stages and may be facing different challenges
I also am very movement driven and thanks to some learning we did at the brain first workshop and my own experience I know that moving can be a lot more than just a brain break it is a pathway for development
As I was a dancer for the majority of my life I hope to bring my love of movement and music to the classroom
I am also very flexible so Having back up plans when things aren’t going over so well, if a lesson is not working move on to something else, try a different approach, allowing extra time for things that are working or if the students need it are all strategies I hope to bring to the classroom
Moving into Things that I am looking forward to learning more about
I am looking forward to delving more into lesson planning next block, we did get a little bit of a preview already but I hope to learn more about the process as it is a daily task for teachers
Looking at curriculum and each core competency and curricular competency’s how am I going to approach that- what will I do with the content and how will I make it accessible for my students
What is my spin? That is essentially what I hope to figure out
Another I would like to learn more about is how to specifically help students that have learning disabilities, and or are dealing with trauma as I know that these are challenges some of my students will face and I want to be able to help them based on their needs
Practicum reflection intro
So just to wrap up I wanted to share a moment I witnessed in one of my practicum visits. A young student asked for a “skin Coloured Crayon” the teachers paused and said You know I think we would call that peach because is there really just one skin colour ?” the student agreed
This moment really hit me because for the student it didn’t seem like a huge moment but it is the little moments that can make the most impact and it may not impact your intended audience the most it may be a bystander or someone who interacts with you or that student who carries those little lessons out into the world
As we have been bombarded with many different ideas, resources, approaches and so on my guiding question or provocation is how do I combine all these things to create the best opportunities for my students.
